If you ever had to take care of someone, do you think you would ever take in someone that is not your blood relative? This couple took in this adorable baby girl who had something surprising to reveal years later...
The Davises was a family of six, They were very pleased when they got the opportunity to adopt a child who was "in need" from the third world country of South Africa. The child was an orphan from Uganda. However when she came to America and started to learn English. She began to communicate with her new parents. At first what sounded like meaningless words soon became cohesive sentences. The parents were horrified when she started telling about her life in Uganda.
Jessica and Adam Davis were the parents of 4 children, all of whom lived in Ohio. But they felt their family wasn't yet complete, so they wanted to adopt an orphan. They went through various agencies, The couple finally contacted European Adoption Constants (EAC) to begin the process of adoption. Soon the agency was able to locate a little-orphaned girl from a village in Uganda for them. They told the family that...
The agency told this family that the girl's father had unfortunately met an accident and had died. Ever since her father passed away, their mother had not been able to look after the kids properly and therefore, this girl was severely neglected. It appeared like a perfect chance to bring a meaningful change to a child's life, so the family cheerfully agreed to adopt this little girl. Howbeit, this family was soon to be met with a very strange revelation.
In the April of 2015, the couple decided to visit the orphanage. The young couple flew all the way to Uganda to meet the 5-Year-Old girl named Mata. She was a beautiful young child and from the moment they laid their eyes on Mata, the Davids had decided that she will be their daughter. Their resolve was further strengthened by looking at the conditions of the orphanage. There were no toys for the kids to play with. Neither were any of the windows barred. The family truly thought that they had made a correct decision, but soon they were gonna find otherwise.
Mata was now living with her new adopted family. They had spent 6 months with this cute African girl and made beautiful new memories with her, here in the United States. As the time progressed, Mata's command of English started to improve. From struggling to speak words, she was now confident enough to produce meaningful sentences. She now began telling her new family about the life she had in Uganda. Her story Shocked Jessica down to her very core.
The family was absolutely in shock upon discovering that everything they had that EAC had told them was completely made up lie. Her stories were, in fact, the mirror image of what EAC had told the young couple. She told Jessica not of being neglected and forsaken, But the love and care her biological mother harbored for them. Jessica soon came to the realization that, they had unknowingly participated in a scam. But this wasn't even the worst part.
The gravity of the situation was starting to dawn on this couple. Not only did they participate in a scam and possible could be convicted of human trafficking. But they were also responsible for separating a loving family, they had taken a child from her loving mother and this was indeed, weighing a lot on this young couples conscience. They knew then and there that they had to do something to fix this. They had to return Mata to her mother.
Upon reflecting back on the adoption process, The family was finally realizing where the things had gone wrong. They were told that the father had died in an accident, Leaving the girl in the care of her neglectful mother, where she was left open to abuse. The Davis's noticed it was actually a very dramatic file. The agent who informed Jessica Davis about Mata was a woman named Debra Parris who worked with EAC. She even pressured the family to act swiftly if they wanted to pursue this adoption. The real picture behind all this laid naked before the family now.
Fortunately for little Mata and her family, there was still hope! Keren Riley of Reunite, a grass-roots organization that works to return the trafficked children back to their birth mothers. She tell's the Davises that facilitators present at the scene are responsible for luring the vulnerable mothers who are often widows with the promise of educational opportunity for their children.
The most horrible truth about such child trafficking rings isn't that it's done by illiterate and desperate people or child snatchers. This whole system is, in fact, working in a very organized fashion. with people working in the white collared profession such as Police, lawyers, teachers and even local leaders participate in this crime, told Keren. To make things easier for them, The language spoken in the villages has no word for "adoption", which is why the mothers are soo easily deceived.
In case of Mata village, A villager-turned-trafficker made a deal with the local church and managed to get seven innocent kids into the adoption circuit, one of whom was Mata. They were then sent to a place called God's Mercy, which is only about 4 hours away from their village. That is the place where Davises first met Mata. A rundown orphanage which looked more like a prison. All this was just the beginning, more facts came to light as Riley worked the case.
CNN managed to obtain an affidavit according to which, Mata's mother had confessed to a Ugandan family court that she was extremely grief-stricken due to passing away from her husband during a car accident. She was approached by some people who told her that they could help with Mata's education. She didn't realize that she had forfeited all her rights as Mata's mother completely. Mata's mother sworn testimony from September 8, 2016, also said that she thought Mata would return to her once her education was complete.
The State Department weighed in this debacle and stated that EAC had indeed failed to properly supervise its sources in the foreign country and to make sure that the kids they were getting weren't abducted, exploited or trafficked from their home. Further adding that this was a case of gross neglect and criminally willfulness that resulted in the failure to comply with the international standards of adoption and therefore failed to provide a safe environment to both the parties involved in business with them.
The Davises were now confident in the fact that Mata was in fact not an orphan at all, but was actually living with her mother in their home, where she was well taken care of and loved. The family and Riley are pretty sure that Mata was indeed separated from her family and home, and moved into the orphanage after the adoption agency had managed to find a rich goat, who would have the money necessary to complete the transaction.
The Ugandan government later came to the conclusion that Mata's mother was indeed Deceived and cheated into giving up her rights as Mata's parent. They also found that the referral form had been forged and wasn't actually signed by the Ugandan police. Which meant Mata's birth mother was still her legal guardian and she was waiting for her daughter to return all this time. Something had to be done to reunite this family ASAP.
Much thanks to Riley's help with the case and investigation, the family was able to have a video chat with Mata's real mother. After witnessing the meeting between Mata and her real mother is was quite obvious to anyone that Mata wasn't neglected at all like she was made out to be by EAC. She, in fact, loved her daughter passionately and had been worried sick about her all this time. It also came to light that Mata's mother was lied to again, by telling her that this American family was sponsoring her education and was taking care of her in the abroad as well.
Mata's mother was oblivious to the fact that she would be sighing away her rights as a parent when she would sign the papers necessary to provide Mata a decent education. all the while, the "sponsor" family was paying the fake adoption agency $15000 under the ruse of processing fee. That money was, in fact, being used to fund this child trafficking ring the villages in Uganda. Now that the truth was out in the open about Mata, the family was packing bags and preparing to fly to Uganda to reunite the separated mother and daughter.
After a long flight over the South Atlantic Ocean, the family along with Mata and Riley had finally made it safely to Uganda. This was a long journey but well worth it because at the end of this flight was a mother waiting desperately for her daughter. This was about to be a very emotional reunion. Mata had been away from her home and her mother for more than 6 months now. One can only imagine how much she had missed her all this time.
On the flight back to Uganda, Jessica asked Mata what was the thing she missed most about her mother, to which she replied "her hand cooked meal". It seemed even though Mata had been away from her home and mother to a place which many would argue is better, she still missed everything that was native to her. Jessica too was full of emotions during this flight, all this time she had loved Mata as her own daughter, She thought this girl had nobody but she to love. with emotions soaring as high as their plane. Jessica was ready to reunite the two.
The Davises did a great thing by returning little Mata back to her mother, As Adam said, if it were their own child that had been separated from them like this, they would too want them back, in fact, they would do everything in their power to bring back their son or daughter. Even the thought of separating them from their children was enough to reduce both Adam and Jessica to tears.
The family knew they were about to witness a miracle. The smile on Mata’s face upon seeing her mother again was a pure indication of their loving relationship. Mata’s mother was overwhelmed with glee as she could not believe that she almost lost Mate forever. This was not the end, though.
Although Mata's Story had a happy ending here. Not all the children who have been abducted from their home under the ruse of higher education and better life meet such a fortunate end. Many of them are sold into slavery or worse. Kids are often used for organ black marketing and this is indeed a reason to worry. Thanks to people like Riley there is still hope though that these children will have the same luck as Mata. Every child deserves to know their true family and home.
